Connecting the Past and Future of Britain’s Living Plant Heritage Through Research, Conservation and Education
Harper & Debbage connects the past and future of Britain’s living plant heritage through research, conservation and education.
Based in Norfolk, we are home to the National Plant Collection® of Fuchsia cultivars bred by James Lye, and developing collections of Fuchsias bred by Robin Clitheroe of Norwich and Hyssopus, alongside Oxalis and Sisyrinchium.
Every Collection has a History — each plant reflects the creativity of its hybridiser, the character of its era, and the dedication required to preserve Britain’s cultivated diversity.

Honouring James Lye – 120 Years
In 2026, we mark the 120th anniversary of James Lye’s passing. We hope to connect with his descendants, partner with organisations such as Market Lavington Museum and uncover lost insights, including one of his elusive descriptive lists of fuchsias.
We would love to hear from anyone with information about James Lye, including those who may have lived in his former residences, are connected to his employer or her family, or are linked to fuchsias he named, such as those for the Duke and Duchess of Fife or Walter and (Lady) Doreen Long.

Research & Heritage
Conservation Through Research
At Harper & Debbage, research and heritage are inseparable. Our work bridges horticultural history with modern conservation, ensuring that the stories and genetics of cultivated plants are preserved for future generations. Through detailed documentation, collaborative study and educational outreach, we contribute to the understanding and protection of historic cultivars particularly those within our existing and developing plant collections.
Fuchsia Gall Mite Tracker

The Fuchsia Gall Mite Tracker is a pioneering citizen science and research initiative led by Harper & Debbage, in collaboration with The British Fuchsia Society, dedicated to monitoring the spread and impact of Aculops fuchsiae (Fuchsia Gall Mite) across the UK. By combining expert research with community participation, the Tracker empowers both amateur and professional growers to identify, report and better understand this invasive pest.
Through the contributions of our network of participants, the Tracker gathers vital data on host plant susceptibility, regional distribution and infestation patterns. This information is instrumental in guiding the development of more resilient fuchsia cultivars and informing best practices for management and control.
Our partnership with The British Fuchsia Society strengthens this initiative by connecting enthusiasts and experts across the country, sharing knowledge and promoting best practice in fuchsia cultivation and preservation.
Beyond its scientific value, the Tracker reflects Harper & Debbage’s broader commitment to sustainable horticulture and the long-term preservation of cultivated fuchsia diversity. By participating, you’re not only helping protect these iconic plants but also supporting a growing body of research that benefits gardeners, breeders and the wider community alike.
